Cell Basics
Cells are microscopic building blocks of the human body that play a functional and a structural role. Cells vary in function, shape and size, and their function is closely related to their structure.
-
Differences
-
Cells have specific qualities that allow them to function efficiently.
Similarities
-
All cells are encased in a cell membrane and contain many tiny structures. The inner portion of the cell is divided into the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
-
Membrane
-
The cell membrane is made of proteins and phospholipids. It divides the inner parts of the cell from the material outside of the cell.
Nucleus
-
Most cells have one nucleus, which functions as the control center of the cell. Mature red blood cells are the only cells that do not have a nucleus.
Cytoplasm
-
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the cell and contains the smaller specialized functions of the cell.
Organelles
-
There are many tiny organelles, or specialized microscopic components, found in the cytoplasm, which function together to regulate, control, provide transport and manufacture secretions for the cell.
