Issues in Gender Discrimination

Gender discrimination is the unfair treatment or judgment of an individual based on his gender. This type of discrimination is especially rampant in the area of employment, where promotion, job employment, wage and other benefits tend to be gender biased.

  1. History

    • Early in history, gender discrimination created social gaps between the two genders. Females were regarded as "less privileged" than males in educational and occupational opportunities. Males, on the other hand, were stereotyped as the "stronger" gender. In fact, many of the laws existing today, especially those that involve the family, are in favor of women.

    • According to a 2002 study for the College Student Journal, aside from educational attainment and job experience, gender seems to be one of the deciding factors for job employment and compensation in some companies.

Lips in her article titled "The Gender Wage Gap: Debunking the Rationalizations,'' women who work 41 to 44 hours a week earn only 84.6 percent of the what men working in similar hours do. According to Guardian.co.uk, gender discrimination has hit men as well, with them being four times less likely to get a secretarial job post than women.

    Effects

    • Because of gender issues, men and women have received unfavorable treatments in the workplace and in the society as a whole. Effects of gender discrimination include unemployment, low wages, insecurity and low self-esteem.

    Prevention and Solution

    • To prevent the continuous gender discrimination in workplaces, an increasing number of employers have adopted a zero tolerance policy for any kind of gender discrimination. In the United States, the Equal Pay Act was included in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This prohibits any type of discrimination, including gender discrimination.
