Science Activities for 2nd-Graders

Children enjoy the subject of science because it satisfies their natural curiosity in the world around them. Activities and experiments are another exciting aspect of the science classroom. They can easily be worked into the classroom and need not be complicated.

  1. Human Body

    • Simple activities regarding the human body can be taking fingerprints and comparing them among the students. Simple taste tests can show how different parts of the tongue taste different characteristics of food.

    Plants

    • Most children know that plants grow from seeds, but some are unaware that plants can also grow from roots. To demonstrate this you will need the top of a carrot, a dish and water. Place the carrot cut side down in the dish, and cover with water; change water daily. In about one week you will notice growth from both the top and bottom of the root.

    Air/ Wind

    • Teachers can easily explain how wind and air move things by using a simple balloon. Fill the balloon with air and pinch the balloon closed, and then let go. Explain that when the balloon was released, the air rushed out and pushed the balloon in the opposite direction.

    Animals

    • Teachers wishing to demonstrate metamorphosis should consider growing frogs. Although growing frogs from tadpoles will take several weeks, kits are available from GrowAFrog.com that include frogs in three stages of metamorphosis. This will allow a complete study in one class period.

    Insects

    • Classes can inexpensively create an ant farm to see how ants live and work. You will need a large jar with small holes punched in the lid; black paper to place around the jar; tape; dirt; small pieces of food for the ants, such as meat, fruit and vegetables; a magnifying glass; and ants, including the queen ant. Parents and teachers can also purchase ants and ant farm kits from AntsAlive.com for educational use.
