The sycamore is the most massive type of deciduous tree in North America, losing its leaves during the fall and into the winter. The American sycamore tree, also known as the buttonwood tree, typically grows along rivers and brooks in the majority of the Eastern United States. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Size

    • The sycamore sometimes grows more than 100 feet tall, but it is the large diameter of its trunk that makes this species of tree so immense, with some being 10 feet across.

    Buttonballs

    • The fruit of the sycamore, called a buttonball, contains the seeds of the tree. The buttonball is about the size of a golf ball and it breaks open when it ripens, scattering the seeds.

    Effects

    • Sycamores are subject to a fungal disease known as anthracnose, a blight that has the potential to result in the tree having a hollow trunk, making it susceptible to damage during storms.

    Features

    • The trademark feature of a sycamore is its many-colored bark. The outer bark strips away as the tree matures to reveal an inside layer of many shades, with gray, tan, brown and white that looks as if the tree possesses camouflage.

    Uses

    • The sycamore has great value as a shade and ornamental tree and manufacturers will use its wood to create furniture, musical instruments and butcher blocks.
