Arthritis Diseases

There are several types of arthritis that can affect your joints. Here is a look at the most common types and a list of other related conditions.

  1. Osteoarthritis

    • Osteoarthritis occurs when the articular cartilage is worn away by overuse, causing stiff and painful joints and inflammation. It typically affects the knees, hips and fingers.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition in which the body's immune system misidentifies the synovial tissue around a joint and attacks, and it could spread to other joints. There is no single cause for rheumatoid arthritis.

    Septic Arthritis

    • Septic arthritis is joint inflammation and pain caused by bacterial infection within the joint capsule and is often a side effect of rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. For the majority of those affected the effects are temporary, but about 40 percent will suffer permanent damage.

    Gout

    • Gout is caused by uric acid deposits collecting in the joints, typically in the lower extremities. The crystals literally grind away at the synovial capsules, bursae, tendons and other tissues. Gout is caused by a diet overly rich in protein.

    Other Conditions

    • Other conditions related to arthritis include ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, lupus, Lyme disease, patellofemoral syndrome, pseudogout, psoriatic arthritis and spondylosis.
