E. Coli Bladder Infections

According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, urinary tract infections and cystitis (bladder infection) are most commonly caused by E. coli. The bacteria commonly enter via your urethra. E. coli travels into the bladder and multiplies, creating a bladder infection.

E. Coli

E. coli (Escherichia coli) are comprised of a wide array of bacteria, some of which are harmless. Others result in various types of infections, including cystitis.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms are increased frequency and urgency along with painful urination. You may also experience pain in your lower back and above your pubic bone.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will often be able to diagnose your bladder infection based on your symptoms. A urine sample may also be used to identify the bacteria.

Treatment

Antibiotic treatment is necessary to eradicate the infection. Bactrim and Cipro are two commonly used antibiotics; however, your doctor will determine the best treatment based upon your individual health factors.

Prevention

According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, to prevent infections you should urinate when you feel the urge, drink adequate amounts of water daily and wipe in a front-to-back motion to prevent bacteria from your anal area from invading your urethra.
