Define Bunion

  1. Symptoms

    • According to FootPhysicians.com, the symptoms that normally appear include pain, redness, burning as well as a visible protrusion on the side of the foot.

    Diagnosis

    • Your primary physician can usually diagnose bunions from the visible bony hump. X-rays may be useful in determining the severity of the bunion.

    Treatment

    • In most cases simple treatments such as a change in footwear, anti-inflammatory drugs or the application of ice packs can alleviate symptoms. In some severe instances your physician may suggest a bunionectomy to remove the bump of bone, according to Footphysicians.com.

    Female Susceptibility

    • The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons reports that women have an increased risk of developing a bunion due to footwear choices, especially high heels and other pointed footwear that may cramp the foot.
