Name Meaning

The name "Texas" means "friends." It derived from the Caddo Indian word for friends or allies, "teyshas." This word was translated by the Spanish explorers as "Teyas" or "Tejas."

Indian Origin

The Caddo Indian tribe Hasinai gave Texas its original name. This Indian tribe originally lived along the Red River in Louisiana, and then began to migrate northwest and south.

Nickname and Motto

The original meaning of the word "Texas"--"friendship"--has gone on to become the state's motto. Texas's nickname is "The Lone Star State," named after the one star on its flag.

State Flag Origins

Texas received its flag in 1845 when it became part of the United States. The same as the U.S. flag, the red stands for courage, the blue is for loyalty and the white is for strength.
