Canine Hypothyroidism Symptoms

The thyroid consists of two small butterfly shaped glands located in the neck responsible for regulating your dog's metabolic rate. When this gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone, your dog's metabolism decreases, causing hypothyroidism.

  1. Causes

    • The most common cause of hypothyroidism in dogs is the animal's own immune system attacking the tissues of the gland. Other causes include genetic predisposition, certain medications or other diseases.

    Risk Factors

    • Although all dogs can develop hypothyroidism, certain mid- to large-sized breeds tend to be affected more often, including golden retrievers, greyhounds and Irish setters. The disease develops most often between the ages of 4 and 10, with spayed females being at higher risk.

    Symptoms

    • Some of the common symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are lethargy, hair loss and intolerance to cold. Reduced heart rate and anemia could also occur.

    Diagnosis

    • After a thorough physical exam, your vet will order blood tests if he or she suspects hypothyroidism. These tests will check the levels of thyroid hormone in your dog's blood, and depending upon the results, your vet may request more specific tests to confirm the diagnosis.

    Treatments

    • Hypothyroidism is fortunately easy to treat. Your dog will need daily doses of a synthetic thyroid hormone in order to even out his metabolism.
