Estrogen Types
Estrogen is a female hormone that is responsible for the regulation of the female menstruation cycle and development of reproduction functions. Human estrogens include estrone, estradiol and estriol. Phytoestrogens and xenoestrogens occur in plants and petroleum products respectively.
-
Estrone and Estriadol
-
In non-pregnant women, the ovaries naturally produce 100 mcg to 200 mcg of estrone and estradiol every day. When women become pregnant, the production of estrone and estradiol is reduced.
Estriol
-
During pregnancy, the majority of estrogen in a woman's body comes from estriol. The production of estriol by the placenta indicates how well the fetus is developing.
-
Phytoestrogens
-
Phytoestrogens----found in some plants (such as red clover and soy)----are used in the treatment of menopause symptoms. They are not strong as the estrogen produced by the body.
Xenoestrogens
-
Xenoestrogens are found in petroleum-based chemicals and products (such as plastic, soaps and pesticides). Xenoestrogen are an extremely potent form of estrogen; overexposure to xenoestrogens can be dangerous.
Synthetic Estrogen
-
Drug companies produce strong synthetic estrogens that are used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT). According to the Women's Health Initiative (2002), synthetic estrogens used in HRT may cause serious side effects.
