Fibromyalgia Cure

While there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, it's possible to effectively treat the symptoms of the disorder. With a little trial and error, you can learn to better manage your symptoms and improve your daily life.

  1. Effects

    • A good fibromyalgia treatment will help ease the pain, fatigue, cloudy thinking and low mood that are often associated with the disorder.

    Diet

    • While not likely the sole cause of fibromyalgia, poor dietary choices can add to the fatigue, pain and depression associated with it. Removing foods to which one is allergic or sensitive, as well as decreasing intake of processed foods, can lower both fatigue and pain levels in many cases. A simple ELISA blood test can pinpoint the offending substances if food sensitivities are suspected.

    Sleep

    • According to ProHealth.com, sleep deprivation has been linked to fibromyalgia in up to 90 percent of patients. Better sleeping habits, including sticking to a sleep/wake schedule and setting aside quiet time 30 minutes before retiring, can help decrease the pain associated with the condition. If insomnia persists, over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids can help.

    Medication

    • Pregabalin (Lyrica) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) are approved to treat fibromyalgia, while tricyclic antidepressants, sedative-hypnotics and narcotic pain medications are sometimes used to treat the accompanying insomnia and pain. Some supplements and medications can have unexpected interactions or side effects. Talk to a doctor before starting any fibromyalgia treatment.

    Benefits

    • Benefits of treatment can include increased productivity, higher energy levels, decrease in pain and overall improvement in quality of life.
