Many people believe that a meteorologist's main job description is to report the weather on the television. While this is a part of the job description for many meteorologists, others do important work nowhere near a TV studio.

    Forecasting

  1. Meteorologists are best known for weather forecasting. They record atmospheric measurements, make upper-air measurements and use satellites to record data from around the world. Combining this data can help predict the weather for specific regions.
  2. Air Travel

  3. Researchers develop tools for safer air travel. This includes a system that detects unsafe winds and warns air-traffic controllers of the issue. Systems like these are installed at many airports.
  4. Climate Change

  5. Many meteorologists research the topic of climate change. They study the interactions of the Earth's living things, like animals, with nonliving things, such as the atmosphere.
  6. Teaching

  7. Some meteorologists prefer to teach. They may teach atmospheric science in high schools, or help graduate students conduct research for a degree. Meteorology has recently become a more common degree found at universities.
  8. Weather Predictor

  9. Meteorologists now use better data and instruments to predict dangerous weather. They are trying to calculate hurricane paths more accurately, as well as forecast tornados further in advance.
