Although some women do not experience morning sickness, most pregnant women do. Morning sickness is caused by a heavy increase in hormones throughout a pregnant woman's body. This increase causes women to become nauseated throughout the day. Most women experience this problem in the morning. It gradually goes away throughout the day. Some women have it all day--others only at night.

First Signs

  • The first signs of pregnancy often include morning sickness. This illness is recognized around the sixth week.

Period

  • Morning sickness lasts around six to eight weeks. Most women stop experiencing morning sickness at the 12th week of pregnancy. There are some rare cases where morning sickness continues throughout the entire pregnancy.

Do's and Don'ts

  • Eat saltine crackers in the morning. Eat five small meals instead of three large ones and avoid skipping meals. Open windows to allow fresh air in and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Lie down after you eat or eat spicy food.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum is a disorder caused by morning sickness. The symptoms are severe nausea with vomiting, weight loss and occasionally electrolyte problems. Tell your doctor if you fear you may have this illness. Hyperemesis gravidarum is treated with special diets and antacids.

  • There is a lollipop on the market called Preggie Pops. These lollipops are specially formulated to cure morning sickness. Vitamin B-6 vitamins also help relieve nausea due to pregnancy.
