Acne & Scar Treatments

Acne is an embarrassing, painful problem that affects millions of teens and adults in America. Severe acne can lead to scarring, but there are a variety of treatments for acne and its aftermath.

  1. Over the Counter

    • If your acne is not severe there are many over-the-counter products you can purchase to tend to the skin problem. Products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur or alcohol and acetone destroy the bacteria that causes acne.

    Antibiotics

    • If over-the-counter products do no work, a dermatologist can prescribe antibiotics to treat acne. The antibiotics can take up to six months to completely work, but the medication kills the acne-causing bacteria.

    Accutane

    • The most extreme medication prescribed is Accutane. This is a strong medication that kills the bacteria that causes acne as well as prevents acne scarring. There are many harmful side effects that can occur with this medication.

    Blue Light Therapy

    • Although there is not much research done on the outcome, Blue Light Therapy is an up and coming trend in acne treatment. This light therapy goes under the skin to kill the bacteria that causes acne and prevent it from returning.

    Ice

    • A natural way to treat acne is using an ice pack or bag of ice. Wrap a bag of ice or icepack in a wash cloth and place it on the swollen areas for 20 minutes for instant relief.
