Is Vistaril an Antihistamine?

Vistaril is a brand name for the medication hydroxyzine, prescribed to treat allergies, anxiety and other conditions. Hydroxyzine in the body converts to cetirizine, an antihistamine that is available under the brand name Zyrtec. However, taking Vistaril has somewhat different effects than taking Zyrtec does.

Antihistamine Method

Vistaril is an antihistamine that works by reducing the naturally occurring chemical histamine in the body. Histamine is involved in allergic responses to harmless substances.

Antihistamine Purpose

As an antihistamine, Vistaril is used to treat allergic skin reactions, such as hives, itching and contact dermatitis. It also reduces allergy symptoms of sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes.

Anxiolytic Uses

Additionally, Vistaril is an anxiolytic drug, with sedating properties effective at relieving anxiety. Hydroxyzine is more sedating than cetirizine and can be used to induce sedation before or after anesthesia.

Other Uses

As with some other antihistamines, Vistaril is effective at relieving nausea and motion sickness and at improving the effectiveness of opioid pain relievers.

Side Effects

Vistaril has side effects similar to other antihistamines. These include drowsiness, confusion, problems with coordination, dry mouth, lack of appetite and stomach upset.
