Antihistamine Overdose Symptoms

Antihistamines are commonly sold over the counter in cold and allergy medications and as drugs to prevent motion sickness. Overdose symptoms can be similar to antihistamine side effects, only more severe.

  1. Initial Symptoms

    • Antihistamine-overdose symptoms similar to common side effects may include blurred vision, dilated pupils, drowsiness, dry mouth, flushed skin, nervousness, ringing of the ears, tremors and weakness.

    Serious Symptoms

    • More serious antihistamine-overdose symptoms include delirium, disorientation, fever and rapid heartbeat.

    Dangerous Symptoms

    • People developing dangerous overdose symptoms may experience heart arrhythmia, hallucinations, hyperthermia and seizures.

    Rare Complications

    • Rarely, rhabdomyolysis has been associated with antihistamine overdose. This disorder involves skeletal muscle breakdown that can cause kidney damage. Other rare reports have been made of kidney failure and pancreatitis. Antihistamine overdose is rarely fatal.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for antihistamine overdose may include emptying the stomach contents through a tube and administering intravenous fluids and activated charcoal.
