Hyperthyroidism Condition & Symptoms

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism is a serious condition that can lead to permanent heart damage or even death.

  1. Thyroid Gland

    • In healthy persons, the thyroid produces the proper amounts of two hormones, thyroxine 3 and thyroxine 4, which regulate the metabolism.

    Common Symptoms

    • A person with hyperthyroidism often experiences sudden dramatic weight loss. Other symptoms include rapid heartbeat, tremors in the extremities, uncontrolled sweating and greatly increased appetite.

    Less Common Symptoms

    • Hyperthyroid sufferers may get goiter, a condition in which the thyroid becomes enlarged and causes swelling at the base of the neck. Women may experience sudden changes in menstrual patterns.

    Tests for Hyperthyroidism

    • When checking for overactive thyroid, doctors gather blood work and a family health history.

    Treatments

    • There are several treatment options, including administration of medications to lower the hormone levels produced by the thyroid, surgery and radioactive iodine therapy.

    Post-Treatment

    • After treatment, patients undergo periodic blood tests to check hormone levels. Some treatments, like radioactive iodine, can cause the thyroid to produce too little hormone, requiring corrective medications.
