Food for Gout Patients

Most gout patients will tell you that proper diet is imperative when it comes to their health and well being. Because there are so many foods that are gout friendly, there is no reason that gout sufferers can't truly enjoy their meals.

  1. Cherry Juice

    • Although not yet clinically proven, cherry juice may reduce uric acid levels in the body. Many health food stores stock cherry capsules, for those who are not fond of the actual fruit.

    Other Liquids

    • Because liquids are very beneficial in the removal of uric acid from the body, it is important to drink plenty of fluids. Water is especially helpful; coffee, tea, juice and carbonated beverages are also acceptable.

    Low-Fat Dairy Products

    • Low fat dairy foods that work well as part of a gout diet include: milk, a variety of cheeses, eggs and even yogurt. The more dairy products consumed, the less risk of severe symptoms.

    Oily or Fatty Foods

    • Oily foods and those high in fatty acids can be consumed as part of a gout diet; good examples are flax seeds, salmon, nuts and olive oils. These foods may help to reduce swelling, as well.

    What to Avoid

    • Avoid seafood, beer and other types of alcohol, dried beans, asparagus, mushrooms, pork, beef, organ meats and meat-based gravies. Many of these items are high in purine, which causes gout symptoms and pain to worsen.
