Library Technician Position Description
Library technicians work under the guidance of professional librarians to help them with the day-to-day operations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment rate for library technicians is expected to grow by eight percent from 2006 to 2016.

Common Duties

The most common duties of library technicians include issuing membership cards, maintaining electronic records, checking in and checking out books, accepting fines, cataloging and stocking books and answering questions about library services.
Special Libraries

In schools and colleges, library technicians assist professors with teaching materials and provide students with coursework material. Some organizations (such as museums, research labs, or government agencies) have special libraries. Library technicians in special libraries are responsible for keeping the specific material up to date.

Library technicians are responsible for opening and closing the library and operating various systems, such as security, HVAC, alarms and elevators.
Mobile Libraries

Some library technicians operate bookmobiles or libraries on wheels. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the bookmobile.
