Basic Electrical Tools & Hand Tools

Any home improvement or repair project requires tools. Certain common tools are necessary whether you are working on an electrical, plumbing, carpentry or some other miscellaneous task. Having the right hand and electrical tools will help your project to go smoothly with less frustration. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hand Tools

    • Typical Tool Box.

Every tool box should contain a 16-oz. hammer, screwdriver set, 8-inch adjustable wrench, putty knife, utility knife, tape measure, drill bits, nail set, 6-inch level, carpenter's square, wood and metal file and a wire cutter. These tools equip you to accomplish most minor tasks. Most people start with these basic tools and add more as needs progress and time goes on.

    Electrical Tools

    • Circular Saw.

Most tasks can be tackled without electrical tools, but it is not practical or desirable. The first electrical tool to buy is a 12- or 14-volt cordless drill because just about every task requires drilling or screwing. The 12-volt battery is lighter than the 14-volt which makes it easier to move around.

A circular saw is useful for cutting paneling, 2 by 4s and other products. There are "contractor grade" saws and "home use" saws. The contractor grade saws are sturdy, more functional and outlast the less-expensive models. The old saying, "You get what you pay for," is applicable here.

A table saw is also a good investment. It is dangerous to rip a narrow piece of wood on a circular saw. Portable contractor-grade table saws are not expensive and will accomplish most home projects. If you plan on making furniture or other fine woodwork, a larger table saw with side extensions is appropriate. If space is tight, purchase the wheels that go with the saw and roll it into the corner when not in use.

If you plan on remodeling, you may need a few more tools to make life a little easier. A reciprocating saw is a must. This saw cuts nails, pipes, wood and is useful for demolition. A jig saw and an electric planer is handy when the trim work begins.

    Maintenance

    • After much use, even hand tools require a little maintenance. If the Phillips tip on your screwdriver is worn, screws become more difficult to turn. When the Phillips screwdriver does not have a replaceable tip, you must discard it. When a common screwdriver (for slotted screws) becomes worn, a file or grinder can bring it back into shape.

Apply a little 3-in-1 oil to loosen up your adjustable wrench or other tools with moving parts. Even files wear out after while and must be thrown away.

    Safety

    • Always wear safety glasses while using tools. Use gloves to prevent cuts. If your tools are not well maintained, injury may occur. A dull screwdriver that slips off the screw can end up piercing your hand or marring the surface of the project. When using a utility knife, cut away from your body.

Use hearing protection when using a circular, table saw and other power tools to prevent hearing loss. Have a solid cutting base so that the saw does not run wild should it bind in the wood. If there are children in the house, always unplug the cord when leaving the area. Children love to press switches and could get injured.

    Considerations

    • If you do not have a tool you need, consider renting it, especially if you only rarely need the tool. Most rental companies will supply almost any tool imaginable. Renting a tool for a short period of time is much less expensive than buying it.
