Rules for the Card Game Garbage

Garbage is a card game in which players try to create melds to dispose of all of their cards. The rules of this game, which uses two 52-card decks, are different from those of Trash, which is sometimes erroneously called Garbage.

  1. Deal

    • After shuffling and cutting the cards, the dealer picks a random amount of them and deals 10 cards to everyone, plus one more to the player on his left. If he grabbed the exact amount of cards needed for the deal, he gets to subtract 50 points from his score.

    Play

    • The player to the dealer's left starts by discarding a card, then play continues clockwise, with players drawing from the deck or discard pile and then discarding. They must try to assemble sets of cards of the same value or runs of cards of the same suit in sequential order.

    Assembling Cards

    • A player who assembles the sets or runs needed for the current round lays them face-up on the table and can then play cards to extend her own or other players' melds. Play continues until one player runs out of cards.

    Goals

    • Players must assemble two sets of three cards in round one, two runs of three in round two, a set of three and a run of four in round three, two sets of four in round four, a set of three and a run of five in round five, three sets of three in round six, a run of seven in round seven, a set of three and a run of six in round eight, two runs of four in round nine, two sets of five in round 10, and a run of 11 in round 11.

    Scoring

    • Once a player runs out of cards, the others get points for the cards remaining in their hands: 20 points for jokers, 15 for aces, 10 for face cards and the face value of the other cards. The player with the fewest points after 11 rounds wins.
