Nursing Baby & Breast Pain

Breast pain is a common complaint among nursing women, and can strike both first-time and veteran moms for a variety of reasons. Most pains will go away with only minor at-home treatment.

Improper Latch

Some women experience pain for 30 to 60 seconds at the start of nursing. If the pain continues longer, the baby may be "latched" improperly to the nipple. Detach and reposition her to relieve discomfort.

Engorgement

When your milk first comes in, breasts may become hard and engorged. Massage, frequent nursing and a warm compress can relieve discomfort.

Nipple Pain

Nipple soreness is common in the early days of breastfeeding. If it doesn't go away, your baby may be improperly latched. A lactation consultant can teach you how to help the baby latch correctly.

Infection

If breasts are sore, red or streaked and accompanied by flu-like symptoms, it may be mastitis, an infection of the ducts. A doctor can prescribe antibiotics to clear it up.

Clogged Duct

If your breast has a single, tender lump and localized redness, it may be a blocked milk duct. Massage the area, use a warm compress and nurse your baby on the sore breast to unclog the duct.
