Cloning Laws

Only 15 states have cloning laws. Of those states, some permit stem cell research but most have banned the creation of clones. A few states simply do not allow state funds to be used for cloning activities. Cloning laws only apply to humans.

  1. Use of Public Money Banned

    • Arizona and Missouri have banned the use of money collected through taxes to pay for both reproductive and therapeutic cloning.

    Banned Completely

    • Therapeutic and reproductive cloning are banned in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, North and South Dakota, and Virginia.

    Reproductive Cloning

    • While some states permit stem cell research, there are some states that only ban cloning for reproductive purposes. Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Iowa, Connecticut and California all allow stem cell research but prohibit reproductive cloning.

    Transfer of Cloning Product

    • Arkansas, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Dakota and Virginia have all banned the transfer or receipt of cloning material.

    Purchasing

    • Purchasing of the ovum, zygote, embryo or fetus is prohibited in California, Indiana, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.
