Parts of a Casket

It is difficult to even think about the loss of a loved one, but in the event that you have to address the issue of a burial, it is important to have as much information as possible about the casket.

  1. Support

    • Steel is often used for the frame, or even the entire casket, and comes in 20-, 18- and 16-gauge. The steel frame ensures that the casket won't collapse under the pressure of the dirt above it.

    Dimesions

    • A casket is usually a rectangular shape, with a split, hinged lid that opens in two sections, like a Dutch door. They vary in size depending on the size of the occupant.

    Interior

    • A cloth lining usually covers the inside of the casket. This lining is often a luxurious-looking material such as stain or silk.

    Transport

    • Most coffins are built with support bars down both sides that can be used to lift and move the coffin.

    Ornaments

    • Many coffins are adorned with decorative carvings and metal ornaments to honor the occupant of the casket, and to give the coffin an elegant look.
