Artificial Turf Pros & Cons

Artificial turf was first introduced in the 1960s for use in sporting arenas. In the 21st century, artificial turf is available for homes and recreation areas. Artificial turf is a blend of synthetic materials, including rubber granules, polypropylene and polyethylene, that produces a grass-like appearance while removing some of the maintenance required with natural turf. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Reduced Weather Delays

    • For sporting arenas, artificial turf provides users with fewer delays and cancellations as the surface should not be affected by the weather.

    More Injuries

    • The original artificial turf products were heavily associated with sports injuries. Studies show that although modern artificial turfs are less likely to cause injuries, the chances are still higher than with natural grass.

    Less Environmental Impact

    • Artificial turf uses less water for maintenance than natural grass and does not use chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers that can be harmful to the environment, children and animals.

    Bodily Fluid Problems

    • Natural turf contains bacteria that act as a kind of self-treatment for the removal of animal droppings and bodily fluids. Artificial turf, on the other hand, requires extensive cleaning and sanitization of areas affected by fluids and droppings.

    Helpful For Dry, Arid Areas

    • In areas where natural turf is hard to grow because of weather conditions--for example, in desert-like areas of Australia--artificial turf can be used to create and maintain recreational areas.

    Heat Problems

    • During prolonged periods of high temperatures, artificial turf can become much hotter than natural grass, making it uncomfortable for users.
