Thyroid Medication for Dogs

Thyroid medication is used to treat a dog with hypothyroidism, a condition caused by insufficient thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are necessary for energy and overall canine health.

  1. Diagnosis

    • Consult a veterinarian when your dog has recurring skin infections, weight gain and fatigue. Blood tests can confirm whether the dog has low thyroid hormone levels.

    Medication

    • Low thyroid levels are treated with thyroid hormone tablets. The active ingredient, levothyroxine sodium, is commonly labeled as Thyroxine, Soloxine, Thyro-Tabs, Thyrosyn or with other names.

    Dosage

    • Follow dosage instructions to keep your dog's hormones at a stable level. Thyroid tablets, available in several sizes, are usually given every 12 hours.

    Timing

    • Ask your veterinarian about timing with meals. Usually thyroid medication is more effective when given on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before a meal.

    Benefits

    • Expect more canine energy and alertness within 2 to 3 days of starting treatment. Skin, coat and muscle tone improve in 1 to 3 months.

    Considerations

    • Test your dog as required. Medication may need periodic dosage adjustment.
