Hyperthyroidism Eye Symptoms

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the metabolism and have an affect on the proper functioning of other organs in the body. Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces too much of the hormones.

  1. Graves' Disease

    • Graves' disease also called thyroid eye disease, is a common type of hyperthyroidism. It was named for Robert Graves, the Irish physician that first discussed this disease approximately 150 years ago.

    Vision

    • Hyperthyroidism can cause double or blurred vision in some people. If the thyroid eye disease becomes more severe, the optic nerve can be damaged causing severe or completer loss of vision..

    Bulging Eyes

    • Proptosis or bulging eyes is the most common symptom of Graves' disease. The swelling occurs because of a build up in fluid, tissue and inflammatory cells.

    Eye Muscles

    • The eye muscles may become stiff, causing the eyelids not to be able to close completely. As the condition progresses, the eye muscles may become scarred. This can permanently limit the movement of the eye.

    Other Symptoms

    • The eyelids may become noticeably swollen or puffy looking. You may experience constant redness, burning, itching and watering eyes. The conjunctiva, which is the thin layer that covers the white part of your eye, may become red and swollen.

    Considerations

    • Thyroid problems are hereditary. After a family member is diagnosed, other family members should be tested regularly. According to the American Thyroid Association, if you keep your hypothyroidism well-controlled, it will not shorten your life span.
