Vytorin Dangers

Vytorin is a combination medication containing both simvastatin (Zocor) and ezetimibe (Zetia). It is prescribed to lower high cholesterol. Zocor, like other statin drugs, blocks an enzyme in the liver necessary for producing cholesterol. Zetia decreases intestinal absorption of cholesterol. Dangerous side effects are rare.

  1. Myopathy

    • Rarely, Vytorin has been associated with myopathy, a serious but usually reversible muscle condition. Symptoms include muscle pain and weakness, as well as fatigue.

    Rhabdomyolysis

    • Even more rarely, Vytorin use can lead to a very serious disorder called rhabdomyolysis. Breakdown of skeletal muscle releases muscle fiber proteins into the bloodstream that can obstruct the kidneys.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

    • Pregnant women and breastfeeding women should not take cholesterol-reducing medications, because both a fetus and a baby require cholesterol for growth.

    Drug Interactions

    • Vytorin interacts with many other drugs. These include anticoagulants, antibiotics, anti-fungal medications, hypertension medications and immunosuppressant drugs.

    Liver Considerations

    • Statins are linked to elevated liver enzymes, so patients with liver disease should not use Vytorin. Anyone who drinks large amounts of alcohol also may not be able to use this medication.
