Life Cycle of a Rice Plant
Rice is a major food source and a staple in many countries around the world. But many people do not know much about the rice plant itself or how the rice gets to their plates. Does this Spark an idea?

Duration
-
Most rice plants are annuals, meaning they must be replanted every year. In the tropics, though, rice can survive as a perennial and come back season after season.
Environment
-
Rice is a semi-aquatic plant that grows in a grass-like form out of shallow waters.
-
Germination
-
A rice seed is also called a grain or caryopsis. The roots grow from this node, and roots beneath the surface are crown roots while roots that sprout above the surface are known as nodal roots.
Gestation
-
The rice plant grows for three to nine months, with an average of five months, going through a vegetative, reproductive and ripening stage before the rice is harvested.
Harvest
-
Rice is harvested generally in September and October, though global efforts to reduce world hunger have proven that in certain areas it is possible to have more than one rice harvest a year.
