Florida DOT Regulations for Reflective Traffic Vests

Florida has established requirements for the safety of road workers, designed to increase visibility and prevent accidents. These rules outline the types of reflective safety vests that are authorized for use any time a worker is on state or federal highways.

Department of Transportation rules regarding safety apparel in Florida are found in the state's "2008 Design Standards" publication, listed under "Index 600, Sheet 4 of 12." These state standards are updated from time to time.

Clothing

Any time workers are in the right-of-way of traffic, they are required to wear safety clothing designed to be high visibility. This clothing must be marked as "ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 Class 2" to comply.

Color

The background color of the clothing used must be orange or red fluorescent, or yellow-green fluorescent. The majority of safety vests meet these color requirements.

Reflection

The reflective area on the vest is required to be orange, yellow, white, silver or yellow-green. Fluorescent color variations are acceptable.

Substitution

If desired, more advanced clothing classified as "ANSI Class 3" can be used. This apparel is more visible, particularly at night, and meets all state requirements.
