Ford Cars History

Ford Motor Co. was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. It introduced Americans to the idea of affordable transportation, the moving assembly line and by 1921 was producing 57 percent of the world's automobiles.

  1. Model T

    • The Model T could reach 45 mph, 25 miles per gallon and had a 20 horsepower, four-cylinder engine. It was a light car that was mass-produced from October 1913 to May 1927, and cost $825 when it was first released and $260 at its lowest in 1924.

    Model A

    • The Model A had hydraulic shock absorbers and safety-glass windshields, could reach 20 mile per gallon, and had a 40 horsepower, four-cylinder engine. It was sold from 1928 to August 1931 at prices close to what the Model T's.

    Thunderbird

    • Thunderbird was introduced Feb. 20, 1954, and stopped being produced in 2005. It began as a two-passenger vehicle, evolved into a four-passenger vehicle before settling into a V-8 two-passenger convertible.

    Mustang

    • The Ford Mustang debuted at the 1964 New York World's Fair and was sold beginning April 17, 1964. As of 2009, Mustangs were still produced. It was remodeled in 1969, 1974, 1994 and 1999.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Ford Motor Co. has fallen upon hard times in recent years, but on Sept. 1, 2009, it announced a 21 percent increase in sales. Its employees were working on environmentally friendly vehicles such as a hydrogen-powered combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid electrical vehicle.
