Argon Gas Facts

Argon is a noble gas, meaning that it is composed of only one element and has a very low level of chemical reactivity. Argon is relatively abundant, easy to access and has many uses in modern technology and research.

  1. Discovery

    • Argon was discovered in 1894 by English chemist Lord Rayleigh and Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay.

    Basic Chemical/Physical Properties

    • Argon exists in both gas and liquid forms. Under normal atmospheric conditions, it is in gas form. The gas is colorless and odorless, with an atomic mass of 39.948 and an atomic number of 18. Argon is classified as a semi-inert non-metal, and is found in very few compounds.

    Uses

    • As an almost completely inert gas, argon is used to prevent chemical reactions from taking place, such as corrosion in light bulbs. It is also used in arc-welding, insulation, technical SCUBA gear, and for growing semiconductor crystals. The radioactive isotope Argon-39 is used for ground water dating.

    Health Risks

    • Argon gas is classified as a simple asphyxiate, meaning that it diminishes oxygen in the surrounding air. Therefore, the most pertinent health risk of argon exposure is oxygen-deprivation, which can lead to nausea, dizziness and eventual death by asphyxiation.
