What Are Hotel Star Ratings?

Hotel star ratings rank quality on a scale of one to five. While there is no universal standard in the United States, the star rating system is a good indicator of hotel quality and services.

Five-Star Rating

These luxury hotels provide the highest degree of service and amenities, and are also the most expensive. They feature personalized service, gourmet restaurants, room service and state-of-the-art fitness centers.

Four-Star Rating

Four-star rated hotels offer superior quality service and upscale amenities, including proximity to quality shopping and entertainment, room service, fitness centers and access to concierge services.

Three-Star Rating

Hotels with a three-star rating feature mid-scale comfort and amenities, including reasonably sized rooms, restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, room service and modest fitness centers.

Two-Star Rating

Geared toward budget travelers, two-star hotels offer basic value accommodations, but often do not include hotel restaurants, room service or fitness centers.

One-Star Rating

One-star rated hotels meet the most basic, budget traveler's needs and provide the least amenities.
