Baby Sleep Methods

Getting a newborn baby to sleep through the night can be one of the most challenging and frustrating aspects of parenthood. Luckily, there are a variety of baby sleep methods available to allow both you and your baby to get a good night's sleep.

  1. The Ferber Method

    • Put the baby to bed while still awake and wait five minutes after the crying starts to enter his room. Try to comfort him, but don't pick him up. Do the same after 10 more minutes and again after 15 minutes, repeating the process every 15 minutes until the baby falls asleep on his own.

    Co-Sleeping

    • Co-sleeping is a controversial method in which the baby sleeps in the same bed as the parent. Due to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends putting the baby in a crib or bassinet next to the bed.

    Gradual Removal

    • On the first night, sit next to the baby until she falls asleep. Move several feet away each night until the baby is able to fall asleep without you in the room.

    Cry it Out Method

    • This method involves allowing the baby to cry until he stops on his own. This may make it difficult to determine if the baby is crying for a more serious reason and should be used cautiously.

    Considerations

    • Little scientific evidence supports one baby sleep technique over another, so choose one based on your personal preference. Do not eliminate naps or put your baby to bed late, which can make her overtired and cause more sleep disturbances.
