Types of Web Servers

A web server is a computer that has software and hardware on it that will allow users to request web pages. The server computer will deliver those web pages to the computers that request them, and may also do other processing with the web pages, such as calculations and entries into databases.

  1. Apache

    • Apache is web server software that is very popular and designed to run on computers with the Linux operating system.

    IIS

    • Internet Information Systems is the web server software that was created by Microsoft and is designed to run on computers with the Microsoft operating system.

    Size

    • There is no required size for a web server, but the more people that will be using the server, the larger the server will be, both in physical size and computing power.

    Features

    • Web servers will have the ability to share files so that the server can deliver web pages to computers that request them.

    Benefits

    • A computer that is set up as a web server and connected to the Internet can share files and web pages with any other user connected to the Internet, anywhere in the world.
