Eye Injuries in Dogs
Dogs are subject to many different types of injuries to the eye. The causes range widely and treatment can vary as well.
-
Foreign Body Injury
-
The most common injury to the eye is a foreign body injury. This occurs when something foreign enters the eye and scratches the cornea. Treatment includes antibiotic/anti-inflammatory drops and the possible application of a patch.
Bacterial Infections
-
Bacterial infections are also quite common. Symptoms include thick, yellow or green discharge and swelling. Treatment includes antibiotic eye drops.
-
Allergy or Illness
-
Allergic or viral conditions in dogs can also cause eye conditions. Symptoms include swelling, redness, and clear discharge. Treatment includes instilling steroid eye drops into the affected eyes.
Corneal Ulcers
-
Corneal ulcers are deep scratches or lacerations across the cornea of the eye. This can be caused by foreign bodies, viruses and improper preparation during surgery. Treatment includes antibiotic ointment and monitoring. Surgery may be required if the condition doesn't resolve quickly.
Bruising
-
Bruising can occur any time there is blunt force applied to the head such as when hit by a car. Most bruising will resolve on its own, but should be carefully monitored by a veterinarian to prevent complications such as glaucoma or blindness.
