Flomax Prescribing Information

Flomax, also known by the generic name tamsulosin, is commonly used to treat urination problems in men with an enlarged prostate by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder. It also helps open up the arteries to allow for better blood flow.

  1. Dosing Instructions

    • Flomax is taken with water once a day thirty minutes after a meal, preferably the same meal each day. Typical dosage is .4 milligrams.

    Common Reactions

    • The most common side effects are slight drowsiness, insomnia, runny nose, sore throat, decreased sex drive and ejaculation problems. It may also cause back pain, nausea, overall feelings of weakness and chest pain.

    Serious Reactions

    • Rare serious reactions include a painful erection, extreme dizziness, fainting and low blood pressure. If these side effects occur, stop taking the medication and call your doctor.

    Avoid

    • You should not take Flomax if you are on an alpha-blocker blood pressure medicine. Alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness. To avoid fainting, stand up slowly after sitting or laying down.

    Overdose

    • Signs of an overdose include a fast heart rate, severe headache, fainting and cold or clammy skin. If you think you may have taken too much, seek emergency medical help right away.
