Gun Safety Facts
Law enforcement employees, hunters and hobbyists use guns. Practicing gun safety is an important part of being a gun owner because practice could spell the difference between life and death.
-
Personal Safety
-
A gun owner should learn how his gun works inside and out, take a firearms training course, keep the gun clean, use the correct ammunition, wear the right protective gear and never use the gun while intoxicated.
Safety for Others
-
Gun owners should always store guns where others cannot get to them, be aware of the area they are shooting in so no one else gets hurt, unload the gun when not in use, always keep fingers off the trigger, watch your step and keep the gun pointed in a safe direction when not shooting.
-
Warning
-
Never point a gun at anything unless prepared to shoot.
Gun Range Safety
-
Along with following regular gun safety rules, know the rules of the range, use the benches provided when loading and unloading guns, keep the safety on and gun pointed downrange at all times, wear protective gear and do not shoot at hard surfaces or water.
Hunting Safety
-
Follow regular gun safety rules and never hunt alone, know where each hunter is stationed, keep the safety on and do not climb over things holding a loaded gun. Only use the scope as intended, not as binoculars, keep control of the gun muzzle during falls and check the gun afterward. Always be absolutely sure of what you are shooting at.
