Define Audible

An audible in football is the act of changing a play call after the team is set for the play but before the snap of the ball. This is executed using a predetermined system of signals.

  1. Function

    • An audible is used to alter a play based on a perceived weakness in either teams' alignment or personnel to exploit that weakness.

    Types

    • The most common type of audible is used by the quarterback after looking at the defense to change the play from a pass to a run based on the number of opposing players at the line of scrimmage.

    Time Frame

    • An audible must be made before the snap, and any movement or shift of personnel on the line of scrimmage must be completed for at least 1 second before the play can continue. One receiver can be in motion at the time of the snap as long as he is not moving forward when the ball is snapped.

    Significance

    • Audibles allow teams to call the most strategically advantageous play quickly and effectively. Successfully executing an audible to set up the correct play will often determine the outcome of the ensuing play.

    Game of Chess

    • There will often be a series of audibles by the offense and defense as each team attempts to maneuver to counter or confuse the opposing team before the snap.
