Guitar Making Tools

If you have ever wanted to try your hand at making a guitar, there are only a few tools that you will need to get you started. They are not expensive; however, you will definitely want to have them when you start your project.

  1. Tenon Saw

    • The tenon saw is a type of hand saw; however, it is much more accurate than other hand saws available, and the teeth are finer as well. The finer teeth create a more accurate cut and smoother edges.

    Combination Square

    • You will use a combination square for the right angles and mitre squares. There is also a ruler as part of the combination square for regular measurements and dimensions.

    Workbench

    • You will use a workbench for your work space, as well as a place to clamp pieces of the guitar as you are working on them. You need a large flat space to take measurements and make wood cuts.

    Plunging Router

    • You will not use the plunging router very much, but you will need it to make the opening of the guitar as well as create other parts of the guitar. The plunging router also makes detailed edges and cuts around the body of the guitar.

    1/2-inch Chisel

    • You will use the 1/2-inch chisel for trimming parts of the wood and to get into smaller areas where the larger tools could chip or split the guitar pieces.

    Marking Gouge

    • The marking gouge will help you make exact parallel lines and marks for joints, as well as additional marks and measurements where a traditional ruler is not enough.
