Accutane, a brand name for isotretinoin, is a prescription oral medication used to treat acne and some cancers. Because of its potential for side effects, doctors often prescribe it only for severe acne.

Dryness

Dryness of the mucous membranes, lips and skin is common. This affects the eyes, too, as patients report irritation, conjunctivitis and permanently thin skin.
Depression

Studies suggest an increased risk of clinical depression for those taking Accutane. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration has received reports that Accutane has caused suicide.

Birth Defects

Accutane is highly likely to cause birth defects during pregnancy. Mental retardation, missing earlobes and visual impairment are common defects caused by this medication.
Infrequent or Rare Effects

Raised blood glucose levels may occur with Accutane. Fatigue, menstrual complications, inflammatory bowel disease and psychosis are also possible.
Drug Interactions

Tetracycline antibiotics, if taken with Accutane, significantly increase the risk of increased pressure in the brain. Additionally, you should not take vitamin A supplements while taking Accutane.
