Rhinitis Symptoms

Rhinitis is an inflammation or irritation of the inner lining of the nose. Rhinitis can be allergic or nonallergic, and the allergic form commonly includes other symptoms in addition to nasal-related symptoms.

  1. Nonallergic Rhinitis Symptoms

    • In nonallergic rhinitis, the nasal lining swells because of expanding blood vessels, and the mucous glands are stimulated. This results in a congested and runny nose, and sometimes phlegm in the throat from postnasal drip.

    Nonallergic Rhinitis Triggers

    • Nonallergic rhinitis symptoms have certain triggers. Triggers may include food, medication, air particulates or odors and weather changes. Nonallergic rhinitis also may be part of a chronic health disorder.

    Nonallergic Rhinitis Duration

    • People with nonallergic rhinitis may have continuous or intermittent symptoms. The symptoms might last for hours, days or weeks.

    Allergic Rhinitis Triggers

    • Allergic rhinitis occurs when the individual inhales an allergen such as mold, dust, animal dander or pollen. Allergic rhinitis is commonly called hay fever, particularly when it is caused by seasonal pollen.

    Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms

    • Symptoms of allergic rhinitis may include symptoms in addition to a congested and runny nose. The individual may experience coughing, sore throat, headache, eye tearing, sneezing and itchy nose, eyes, throat or skin.
