Ankle Fracture Symptoms

Ankle fractures may be misdiagnosed as simple sprains due to the similarity between symptoms. However, the type, duration and intensity of symptoms help correctly diagnose a broken ankle.

Discoloration and Pain

Pain will occur at the site of the fracture and travel up and down the leg. The pain will increase with activity and decrease with rest. The ankle may turn a dark shade of blue-green or be off-color in general.

Significant Swelling

An ankle fracture will have significant, bulbous swelling. The swelling will be localized or may travel up the length of the leg and will persist for three or more days.

Inability to Walk or Bear Weight

A fracture will make it very difficult to walk due to pain. The patient may even have problems bearing weight.

Deformity

The ankle may be deformed or look out of place. A deformed ankle is the sign of a severe fracture, and the patient needs to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Treatment

The doctor will diagnose the ankle by applying pressure or moving the ankle a certain way. He will use an X-ray, bone scan or CT scan to be sure that the ankle is fractured. Depending on the severity of the fracture, the doctor may immobilize the ankle or perform surgery to heal the foot.
