Mangrove Tree Facts

Mangrove trees are some of the most unique trees in the world, as well as some of the most easily identifiable. These trees have a unique relationship with salt water and poor soil that allow them to thrive there. They are also responsible for keeping ecosystems together, and should be protected from deforestation at all costs.

Identification

Large roots holding the trees above the ground or water are characteristic of mangrove trees. Leaves are light green, small and round.

Features

Mangrove trees survive salt water inundation by excreting it at the root level and by storing excess salt in leaves that later fall off.

Types

Four common types of mangrove trees include the red mangrove, the white mangrove, the black mangrove and the buttonwood. Each of these tolerates salt differently, which means they will grow in different tidal zones.

Geography

Mangrove trees are found all over the world in tropical and subtropical climates. They are found in tidal zones, swamps and shorelines.

Reproduction

Mangrove trees reproduce using specialized seeds. These seeds actually start growing while still attached to the parent tree so that they can root themselves quickly when dispersed into water.

Significance

These trees are extremely important to the surrounding ecosystem. The roots are home to young marine creatures, from crabs to fish; seabirds use the stable branches for nests.
