In the past decade, how a person attends a college has changed with technology. Some take classes online, others study by distance, but many still go the traditional in-class route. The one the student chooses is determined by many factors, including their method of learning.

    Types

  1. Online degrees are degrees that are taken through online courses from a specific school or a combination of schools.
Distance learning is when a student takes classes at a college through home study or online. Distance learning can also be a combination of at-home and in-person learning.
The traditional method of study is done in-person at a college location.
  2. Significance

  3. Students can get their degrees in a variety of ways these days. Distance learning could be a program through Harvard University, where the school allows people to take courses from a distance and even obtain degrees in general areas such as liberal arts.
  4. Warning

  5. There are many diploma mills and unaccredited schools that make themselves seem legit. They tend to offer degrees for "life skills" at low costs and have bogus accreditation.
  6. Considerations

  7. Student should be aware of the discipline needed to study online or through distance learning. There are generally no reminders of work due, chapters that must be read and tests prepared for. This could be one of the reasons why the majority of people studying online or by distance are people in midcareer.
  8. Benefits

  9. The benefits of studying for a degree online or through distance education are numerous. Students have the ability to study when their schedule permits, as opposed to the fixed hour of a traditional class. The costs associated with an online degree can be significantly lower than attending the class. There is no need to relocate to the school.
