Rules & Regulations for Air Travel
Since 9-11, rules and regulations for air travel have become more stringent and more well enforced than ever. You should know the rules and regulations that apply to leisure and business travelers before getting on a plane to save you time and headaches when traveling by air.
-
Liquid rules
-
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recommends travelers follow the 3:1:1 rule for liquids when traveling: liquids in your carry-on luggage must be in 3.4-ounce bottles or less placed in a 1 quart bag, and only 1 per person. Larger containers of items such as medications or baby formula are allowed.
Proper Identification
-
Proper identification is a requirement for travel. This includes a state- or government-issued ID card or a United States passport. For children, have either a birth certificate or passport to ensure travel requirements are met.
-
Secure Flight Rules
-
In 2009, new Secure Flight rules began taking effect. When fully implemented, passengers will be required to provide full names, birth dates and gender as shown on their ID. This is being done to eliminate mistakes when screening passengers on a watch list. If you get flagged, you may be given a redress number, which you will need to provide when traveling in the future.
Pets
-
Pets are allowed on flights and may be in the passenger area in carriers stowed under the seat or in the cargo area. The security agents may scan the pet carriers but will not scan the pet, according to the TSA. Regulations on actual travel arrangements vary by airline.
Prohibited Items
-
Items that are prohibited during air travel include anything than may be considered a weapon. A full list is available on the TSA website but includes such items as guns, scissors, box cutters, golf clubs and hockey sticks. Snow globes, lighters or gel inserts for shoes are items that can be checked.
Considerations
-
TSA rules and regulations for air travel have been put in place to help protect travelers on U.S. flights and to prevent unwanted attacks.
