Requirements for Learners Permit in Virginia

There are several requirements for getting a learner's permit in Virginia.

    Minimum Age

  1. New drivers must be at least 15 years, 6 months old.
  2. Younger than 18

  3. If younger than 18 years old, written permission from the parents must be presented, or you must be married or emancipated from your parents. You must show proof of the marriage or emancipation. You must also have completed a driver's education program.
  4. Documentation

  5. You must also provide documentation showing your legal identity, age and residency in Virginia. Bring a Social Security card if you have one.
  6. Older than 18

  7. If you are older than 18 years old and do not have a license issued by Virginia, or any other state or foreign country, you must pass an approved driver's education course or hold a Virginia learner's permit for 30 days before taking the Department of Motor Vehicles' road skills test.
  8. Documents

  9. Some documents that will be accepted to show your legal identity are a birth certificate, a U.S. passport, or documents of naturalization or citizenship. Proof of residency might include a pay stub, bank statement or utility bill.
