- Nylon leashes are durable and washable. They come in a variety of colors, often with matching collars. They come in several lengths, but six feet is the most common, as a shorter leash allows for more control of the dog.
- Leather leashes are also durable, although generally more expensive than nylon. Leather tends to soften over time, making it comfortable for the dog owner to grip.
- Retractable leashes coil inside a plastic housing. A thumb control allows the dog owner to let the leash out to its full length (often as much as 26 feet) or to stop the leash from expanding and to retract it.
- Chains are not generally used for walking dogs; rather they are designed to leash a dog to a tie-out, or stake, in an outdoor area. This allows the dog to roam over a designated area the length of the chain.
- For those dog owners who like to exercise with their dogs, there are specialty leashes such as ones that attach to a belt for jogging, or to a bicycle, allowing the dog to run alongside.
