GERD & Arm Pain

Many people suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, a common cause of heartburn and other discomfort. While many individuals have only minor discomfort, others are effected by more serious symptoms. One rare but possible side effect of this condition can cause pain and discomfort in the chest and arms.

GERD Causes

  • GERD, or " gastroesophageal reflux disease," is caused when food moves from the stomach toward the esophagus. This is the tube that connects the mouth and the stomach.

GERD Effects

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease often causes an irritation along the esophagus. This leads to pain and heartburn, in addition to other possible symptoms, including difficulty swallowing and nausea.

GERD Additional Effects

  • In some uncommon cases, GERD can cause addition effects, including pain in the arm. In these cases, patients report a feeling of pain or pressure along the elbow and arm. This is caused by inflammation of the diaphragm, leading to nerve pain.

GERD Pain Treatment

  • Treating pain associated with GERD usually involves dietary changes to prevent reflux. This can include avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and foods with citrus or acid. Medications may be prescribed if prevention is not effective.

GERD Pain Warnings

  • In addition to GERD, chest and arm pain can also be caused by serious heart conditions. For this reason, unusual pain or discomfort in these area should be reported to a physician until the cause can be determined.
