Properties of Grapefruit Seed Extract

The properties of grapefruit seed are anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiviral. GSE extract is so versatile that is also used in food and cosmetics, from skin care to animal health and surface cleaning. It is considered environmentally safe, non-toxic and biodegradable.

What is it?

Grapefruit seed extract contains antioxidants and ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C. GSE has such a low toxicity level that it is able to be used as a wide-spectrum antimicrobial.

How it works

Many people have used grapefruit seed extract to reduce inflammation, but there is no clear understanding of why it works. Because of its properties, it is considered a germicide that is highly effective on fungi, bacteria and parasites as well as an antiviral without any side effects.

History

GSE was supposedly discovered by scientist Jacob Harich right after World War II; he was savoring the fruit when he bit into a seed. The bitterness surprised him and started a quest as to what makes it so bitter. He moved to Florida, and surrounded by the fruit, began his experiments.

Considerations

Grapefruit seed extract is made by taking the grapefruit seeds and, through pulping, turning it into a highly acidic liquid.

Fun Facts

GSE is used to sterilize hospital operating areas as well as in inhalators to control infection. As a facial cleanser, apply two to three drops of GSE to the fingertips and gently massage the wet facial area in circular motions for about a minute.
